Violoncellissimo 100 – a concert that breaked the record
100 cellists under the baton of maestro Cristian Mandeal
On Sunday, May 26, at 7 p.m., at the Romanian Athenaeum, an extraordinary and unique concert will take place. For the first time in Romania, 100 cellists from all over the country will come together to express their gratitude to their teachers through the most beautiful form of homage, the collective one.
Alongside Marin Cazacu, soloist of the “G. Enescu” Philharmonic and professor doctor at the National University of Music in Bucharest, the initiator of this unique event, and already established personalities of Romanian cello such as Alexandra Guţu – soloist of the “Banatul” Philharmonic in Timişoara, Dan Prelipcean – member of the Voice Quartet and professor doctor at the “George Enescu” University of Arts in Iaşi, Răzvan Suma – soloist of the Radio Orchestras and Choirs and associate professor at the National University of Music in Bucharest, Filip Papa – member of the Ad Libitum Quartet, Sebastian Vârtosu – member of the Gaudeamus Quartet, the most valuable cellists from Bucharest, Iaşi, Cluj-Napoca, Timişoara, Braşov, Craiova, Sibiu, Piteşti, Satu Mare, Oradea and Arad will also participate.
The 100 cellists will sing in memory of the great teachers Constantin Dimitrescu, Dimitrie Dinicu, George Georgescu, George Iarosevici, Gheorghe Rus, Serafim Antropov and Radu Aldulescu.
The concert program will contain original works and transcriptions for different cello ensembles created by composers Carl Orff, Samuel Barber, Tomaso Albinoni, W.A. Mozart, Constantin Dimitrescu, David Popper, Carl Davidov, Dimitri Shostakovich, Astor Piazzolla and Sabin Păutza,
Under the baton of maestro Cristian Mandeal, one of the greatest Romanian conductors, who will conduct the Violoncellissimo ensemble for the second time, famous pages from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, the famous Adagio by Samuel Barber, the Anthem by Carl Davidov and the most beloved and listened to Waltz by Dimitri Shostakovich will be performed.
That same evening, at 6 p.m., in the lobby of the Romanian Athenaeum, the launch of the memoirs “Rococo Variations in Four Countries” by the legendary cellist Vladimir Orloff, who turns 85 that day, will take place.
After participating in the 2001 International Festival “G. Enescu” with a hugely successful concert and after numerous recitals in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timişoara, Iaşi, Braşov, Sinaia and Rm. Vâlcea, the Violoncellissimo ensemble amazed the audience in 2008 with a “record-breaking” concert, when…60 cellists appeared on the stage of the Romanian Athenaeum.
The adjectives “extraordinary”, “sensational”, “unique”, “unforgettable evening”, which appeared in the press, made the rounds of the Romanian musical world.
The Violoncellissimo Ensemble is invited again this year to hold a new concert on September 27 at the Romanian Athenaeum, within the International Festival « G. Enescu »
